The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila has said that the president’s ongoing economic and policy reforms demonstrate a commitment to securing Nigeria’s future rather than seeking political advantage ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Saturday at the southern summit of the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Gbajabiamila noted that Tinubu could have chosen easier, more populist measures in his first term but instead opted for bold reforms with long-term benefits.
Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu has rolled out key economic changes, including the unification of Nigeria’s multiple foreign exchange windows to stabilise the market and the removal of the petrol subsidy, which he has described as an unsustainable burden on the economy.
“Today, the federal government is no longer paying inflated subsidy claims enjoyed by a privileged few; every Nigerian child is guaranteed access to tertiary education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund,” Gbajabiamila said.
He added that the recently signed tax reform laws have ushered in “a new era of economic justice built on fairness, accountability, and national growth.”
“These are the actions of a leader thinking about the next generation, not the next election,” he stressed. “President Tinubu has chosen to be a leader rather than a politician. A politician thinks about the next election, but a leader thinks about the next generation.”
Gbajabiamila argued that if Tinubu were merely focused on political survival, he would have delayed reforms until a second term to avoid immediate backlash. “Because of his conviction and understanding of the job ahead, he started the reforms from day one, risking everything for the good of the next generation,” he said.
In August, Gbajabiamila had also urged Nigerians to support Tinubu’s re-election bid to enable him to complete his reform agenda and ongoing projects.
