A 30-year-old woman, identified as Adama Hannafi from Auyakawa village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has reportedly taken her own life by hanging at Sumore Village.

The tragic incident was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement released to journalists in Dutse by the Police Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam, who said it occurred around 3 p.m. on October 7, 2025. According to him, the police received a distress call reporting that Adama, who had been mentally unstable, was found hanging from a tree.

“A team from Yalwawa Division rushed to the scene and found her lifeless body, which was carefully lowered for examination. No foul play was suspected,” he explained.

Adam added that the body was later taken to Dutse General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death.

Preliminary findings, he noted, indicated that the deceased had been battling mental health issues before the incident. She is survived by her husband and four children.

The police spokesperson urged residents to promptly report any signs of emotional distress or strange behaviour to the nearest police station or health authorities for immediate intervention.

“This tragic event highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and support for mental health challenges in Jigawa State communities,” he added.

He further appealed to the public to show empathy and vigilance toward individuals who may be silently struggling with mental health challenges.

Adam also called for collective efforts to “break the silence around mental illness” and encouraged families to seek early medical and psychological support to prevent similar tragedies.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Dahiru Muhammad, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and advised members of the public to remain observant and caring toward relatives or neighbours showing signs of mental distress.
