Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has granted clemency to six inmates in correctional facilities across the state as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
In a statement on Wednesday, Fintiri said the decision followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and was based on the inmates’ positive change in behaviour.
“Therefore, in the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in line with the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to six persons who have served various jail terms and have significantly demonstrated good conduct over the years,” the governor stated.
He directed their immediate release, listing those freed as Wamari Godwin, Abraham Marksunil, David Paul, Ibrahim Adamu, Usman Inuwa, and Sani Yahaya.
Independence Day, observed annually on October 1, marks Nigeria’s freedom from British colonial rule in 1960. The day is celebrated nationwide with official events, cultural displays, and community programmes, although the federal government cancelled military parades this year.
