As a teenager, my world felt uncertain. My father had made it clear he would not support my education. I was determined to go to school, but I had no financial backing. I carried the weight of fear and responsibility on my young shoulders. Living with relatives came with maltreatment, and I eventually moved to live with my mum, a single mother raising my sister and me.

I remember listening to Myles Munroe’s message on maximising your potential. That night, I prayed sincerely, asking God to reveal my talents and help me develop them so that people would pay for the gifts He placed inside me. Not long after, I performed a solo dance choreography in church. A young girl in the audience told her school owner about me, and I was invited to train their students for their end-of-year party. The choreography was a success, and they employed me as a teaching assistant. I also taught the children dance classes. It was amazing helping children develop their potential, even as a child myself.

Teaching dance gave me confidence and independence. More schools began to hear about me, and I started working with several of them, saving diligently for my education. Dance became my voice and my shield. In a society where many young girls are vulnerable to exploitation by men who promise to take care of them, my gift gave me a different path. It opened doors, helped me stand on my own, and gave me the courage to dream bigger.

Through dance, I was able to look after myself, save for university, and build a sense of purpose. My timidness faded. I found strength in doing something meaningful, and I discovered that I was capable of shaping my own future.

This message is for the girl child, especially those in underserved communities. You are more powerful than you have been told. Your dreams are valid, and your talents are treasures waiting to be uncovered. There may be moments when it feels like no one believes in you, but do not let that define your future. Discover what you carry inside. Develop it, nurture it, and use it as a stepping stone. You can rise above your circumstances. You can build a life you are proud of. Resilience, faith, and determination can open doors where support may be lacking.

I also speak to families, communities, educators, and leaders. Create safe spaces where girls can flourish. Invest in their education, their creativity, and their dreams. Protect them from harmful practices that limit their potential. Encourage them to lead, to speak, to learn, and to thrive. Give them opportunities to explore their gifts and become contributors to their communities.

When we believe in girls and give them room to grow, we do more than change individual lives. We shape stronger families, stronger communities, and a better future for all.

I was once that girl who had no financial support but found strength through talent and determination. Today, that same talent has taken me to global stages where I tell stories through dance, celebrate culture, inspire others, and create spaces for healing. My story is not unique. It is proof that when a girl is empowered, she can transform her life and influence the world.
