Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has challenged his teammates to keep up their winning momentum after their dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, the club’s first win there in almost a decade.
Maguire was the hero on Sunday, heading in an 84th-minute goal that sealed a memorable comeback for United and handed manager Ruben Amorim back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time. The result lifted United to ninth on the table, just two points behind third-placed Bournemouth and fourth-placed Liverpool.
Speaking after the game, the former United captain stressed that while the victory was special, it must serve as a foundation for greater consistency.
“We’ll probably get a lot of praise this week because of our resilience and fighting spirit,” Maguire said. “But if we don’t perform next weekend against Brighton, we’ll be right back where we started. We need to build on this, keep the momentum going, and deliver positive performances every week.”
He added that confidence and consistency are key to sustaining results.
“Good performances bring good results. We’ll take the positives and confidence from this win, but we must turn up at Old Trafford next week and get the job done again.”
Maguire, who missed a late chance in last season’s 2-2 draw at Anfield, admitted that finally scoring there was a personal relief.
“I’ve been here seven years, and not winning at Anfield has always bothered me,” the 32-year-old revealed. “With my contract ending this season, this might be my last game here for United, so it means a lot to finally tick that box.”
United will look to extend their revival when they host Brighton next weekend as Amorim’s men aim to keep their resurgence on track.
