Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has etched his name in history as Nigeria’s highest-ever goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League.
The Galatasaray striker achieved the milestone on Tuesday night after converting a 16th-minute penalty in his side’s clash against Liverpool, taking his tally in the competition to 10 goals.
With the strike, Osimhen surpassed the previous Nigerian record of nine goals held by former Inter Milan and Newcastle United star, Obafemi Martins.
Osimhen’s Champions League journey began in 2019 with Lille, when he scored against Chelsea on October 2 of that year. He later found the net several times for Napoli before continuing his scoring run with Galatasaray to reach double figures.
Beyond this Champions League exploits, Osimhen has enjoyed remarkable success at club and continental level. He became the first African player to win the Serie A Golden Boot after scoring 26 goals for Napoli in the 2022/23 season.
In 2023, he was crowned CAF African Footballer of the Year, becoming the first Nigerian since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999 to receive the prestigious award.
