Former Jigawa State governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has taken legal action against his party, seeking to halt its upcoming national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Lamido, who also once served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, arguing that the convention process was flawed and discriminatory.

In the case marked FHC/ABJ/CD/2229/2025, filed through his counsel, Jephthah Chikodi Njikonye (SAN), Lamido asked the court to restrain the PDP from proceeding with the convention, which is meant to elect new national officers. He also urged the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising or recognizing the event, insisting it would otherwise give legitimacy to an illegal process.

Lamido’s main grievance is that he was allegedly denied the nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman, claiming this act was unlawful and contrary to the party’s constitution and internal guidelines.

According to him, the PDP failed to provide a level playing field for all qualified members to participate in the leadership contest. He, therefore, asked the court to issue a mandatory injunction compelling the party to make the nomination form available to him.

The former governor also wants the court to bar INEC from taking part in or recognizing any convention activities until he is allowed to contest.

This latest development adds a new twist to the internal crisis within the PDP, which has been grappling with factional disputes and leadership tussles ahead of the crucial Ibadan convention.
