Sowore-omoyele

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the arrest of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore was carried out to ensure fairness in prosecuting individuals involved in Monday’s protest in Abuja.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated this on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja.

According to Hundeyin, Sowore allegedly led protesters into a restricted area during a demonstration held in solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

He said “If we proceed to charge some protesters to court but leave out the person who led them into a restricted area, that would not be fair.
In the spirit of justice and fair play, Omoyele Sowore was arrested today.”

Hundeyin added that Sowore’s detention would not exceed legal limits and that he would be charged in court promptly.

“Like the others, he won’t spend up to 24 hours with us. Once we complete the necessary documentation, he will be arraigned. Our plan is to ensure that he appears in court today,” he explained.

PUNCH Online earlier reported that Sowore was arrested on Thursday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, shortly after appearing to show solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore has been a leading voice in campaigns calling for Kanu’s release and had led a protest in Abuja on Monday demanding his freedom.
