The Osun State Police Command has requested that the Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Isaac Omoyele to provide concrete evidence to support his claim that gunmen attempted to assassinate him on Monday night.
According to the spokesperson for the Amotekun Corps, Idowu Yusuf, Omoyele was attacked by armed men around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road in the Kobo area of Osogbo while driving home in his private vehicle after work.
Narrating his ordeal, Omoyele said he noticed a vehicle pull up beside his car before unidentified gunmen, whose faces were covered, opened fire.
“They drove side by side with my car and suddenly started shooting. Bullets hit my vehicle, but I didn’t stop. I kept driving through the hail of gunfire. I was hit but managed to escape,” he said.
Yusuf confirmed that the incident had been officially reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division in Osogbo.
However, when contacted for an update, the spokesperson of the Osun Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi said an investigation could not begin until Omoyele provided evidence to substantiate his claims.
“He reported that he was attackedband our officers have visited the scene. We asked him to bring the vehicle and any other relevant proof before we can commence full investigation,” Ojelabi explained.
The alleged attack comes less than a week after a violent clash involving Amotekun operatives in Akinlalu Community, where three residents were reportedly killed during a confrontation.
The incident sparked public outrage, with many residents and civil society groups calling for the arrest and prosecution of the officers involved.
Police records later identified the deceased as Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji and Abiola Olutayo, while those injured included Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19). The police also confirmed that Amotekun personnel removed the corpses from the scene.
In response, the Amotekun leadership admitted that three people died in the operation but claimed their officers acted in self-defence after being ambushed by hoodlums who had earlier seized two rifles belonging to the Corps.
Meanwhile, during a visit to the Alakinla of Akinlalu, Oba Oluwabusola Oloyede, the Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Oyewusi, assured the community that the state government would ensure justice for the victims.
“We sympathise with the families and urge the youths to remain calm. The government and police are investigating, and justice will be served,” Oyewusi said.
He added that the state government would also provide necessary support to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
