A community leader from Nkoro in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, distinguished Comrade Williams Ibinabo, has appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to urgently extend the state’s shoreline protection and sandfilling project to the Nkoro axis, to curb the recurring menace of flooding and erosion.

In an open letter addressed to the governor and dated October 17, 2025, Ibinabo expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara for his administration’s approval of the revalidation of the 4.8-kilometre reinforced concrete shoreline protection and reclamation project in Queens Town, covering Epellema–Iloma–Minima communities.

He described the project as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to infrastructure development and the welfare of Rivers people.

According to him, the people of Nkoro continue to face severe challenges caused by coastal erosion and flooding, which have led to displacement, destruction of properties, and loss of livelihoods.

“This is my third attempt to draw Your Excellency’s attention to the plight of Nkoro people,” he wrote. “Our communities are surrounded by water and remain under constant threat from erosion and flooding. The situation is becoming increasingly dire, and we fear for the safety of our people.”

The community leader cited Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution, which places priority on the security and welfare of citizens, as the basis for his appeal to the governor to urgently approve shoreline protection and sandfilling projects for Nkoro.

He noted that such intervention would not only safeguard lives and properties but also restore hope and stability to the affected communities.

Ibinabo also commended the Fubara administration for its developmental strides in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, education, and healthcare. He further appreciated the inclusion of Nkoro people in governance, noting the appointment of an Nkoro indigene as the Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area as a sign of the governor’s inclusive leadership.

In his closing remarks, Ibinabo expressed optimism that Governor Fubara’s administration would consider the appeal with urgency and compassion, in line with its people-oriented governance approach.
