Comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has revealed that his father initially disapproved of his decision to pursue comedy.
Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams, monitored by PUNCH Online on Saturday, Sabinus explained that his father had always hoped he would become a lawyer.
Despite several attempts, he was unable to gain admission to study law and eventually opted for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
It was during his university years that he discovered his talent for comedy and began creating skits, a journey he kept hidden from his father.
His father only became aware of his career path a year after graduation when he saw Sabinus featured on posters for comedy events.
The revelation sparked intense anger. “He was very furious. He said, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus recalled.
According to him, his father’s perception changed only after he began earning from comedy and contributing financially to the family. As Sabinus’ popularity grew, his father eventually gave his full support.
Sabinus, now one of Nigeria’s most recognisable comedians, rose to fame through short, humorous skits shared across social media platforms.
His experience mirrors that of many young Nigerians whose parents prefer traditional, “prestigious” career paths such as law, medicine, or engineering over creative professions.
