The Presidency has debunked reports suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to visit the White House on Tuesday for a meeting with United States Vice President, J.D. Vance.

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, refuted the claim in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, describing the report as completely false and misleading.

The clarification follows recent tensions sparked by statements from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who allegedly threatened possible military action against Nigeria over claims of persecution and killings of Christians. Trump had also reportedly listed Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing continued violence against Christians and alleged government inaction in protecting religious minorities.

The Nigerian government, however, has consistently denied any persecution of religious groups, insisting that such claims are baseless.

Reacting to the viral report about President Tinubu’s supposed visit, Ajayi criticized the publication for spreading misinformation and fuelling unnecessary public speculation about the President’s diplomatic schedule.

He emphasized that if such a visit to the White House were to occur, it would be a meeting with the U.S. President l, not the Vice President.

“There’s a report by Sahara Reporters claiming that President Tinubu will visit the U.S. on Tuesday to meet Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true. Unfortunately, this fake news has already inspired a number of uninformed commentaries. If President Tinubu visits the White House, it certainly won’t be to meet a Vice President.”
