Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are now firmly positioned to compete for major honours as he celebrates six years at the helm of the North London club.

The Spanish tactician, who took charge in December 2019, believes his long-term rebuilding project has transformed Arsenal into genuine title contenders once again. A win away at his former club Everton this weekend would see the Gunners sit top of the Premier League table at Christmas, as they continue their push for a first league title since the famous 2003/04 “Invincibles” season.

Although Arteta has lifted just one major trophy which is FA Cup early his reign at Emirates Stadium, his impact on the club has been far-reaching. Under his leadership, Arsenal have re-established themselves among England’s elite, returning to the Champions League and consistently challenging for the league title.

Between 2017 and 2022, Arsenal endured six straight seasons outside the Premier League’s top four. However, that period of decline has been replaced by renewed consistency, with the club finishing second in the league in each of the past three campaigns.

Reflecting on his journey, Arteta highlighted the broader progress made beyond silverware.

“The transformation has been around the club in terms of size, revenues, the squad we’ve built, its value, and the sporting success we’ve achieved, even though we haven’t won major trophies yet,” he said on Friday.
“It’s been very consistent, so I believe we’re in the right place.”

Arsenal currently lead defending champions Manchester City by two points at the top of the table, although their advantage has been trimmed in recent weeks following draws against Sunderland and Chelsea, as well as only their second league defeat of the season away at Aston Villa.

The coming weeks will test the depth and resilience of Arteta’s squad, with a hectic festive schedule that includes six matches between December 20 and January 8.

Asked what he wants most for Christmas, the 43-year-old manager was characteristically straightforward.

“Win, win, win, win, win all the games,” Arteta said.

“The rest will come naturally, but my mood and energy will definitely be better if we keep winning.”

As Arsenal enter a crucial phase of the season, Arteta’s message is clear: the foundation has been laid, and now it is time to deliver.
