The academic community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
His younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, confirmed his passing in a statement on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. According to the family, the respected scholar died at the age of 64 after a brief illness.
Professor Oyeweso was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding historians. Over the years, he earned national recognition for his deep scholarship, commitment to education, and passion for mentoring younger academics. His work spanned several decades, during which he authored influential research publications, contributed to national intellectual discourse, and served in various academic and administrative capacities.
Before becoming OAU’s Pro-Chancellor, he had served as a lecturer, researcher, and university administrator, inspiring generations of students with his knowledge, humility, and dedication to academic excellence.
His death has been described as a major loss not only to Obafemi Awolowo University but also to the broader Nigerian academic community.
Prof. Oyeweso is survived by his wife, children, and other family members, who are now grieving the departure of a patriarch described as gentle, disciplined, and deeply committed to service.
According to the family, his remains will be laid to rest today in his hometown of Ede at 4pm, immediately after the Asr prayer.
