Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, says his recent move from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress was driven by the need to place the state in harmony with President Bola Tinubu’s political direction and to strengthen cooperation with the federal government.
Fubara, who announced his defection earlier in the week, received his APC membership card on Friday at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The card was handed to him by the state APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha.
Speaking at the ceremony, the governor described his shift as a “spiritual assignment,” stressing that Rivers State must align with the President’s political path to ensure peace, effective governance, and continued development.
“We cannot pursue a different direction when the President is pursuing another. Joining the APC is part of our commitment to ensure a seamless working relationship and to contribute meaningfully to his re-election efforts in the state,” Fubara said.
He explained that the decision was taken to protect the state’s long-term interests and enhance its partnership with the federal government. According to him, working closely with President Tinubu will open doors for development projects and secure Rivers State’s future.
Fubara expressed appreciation to APC leaders for welcoming him into the party and promised to strengthen its structures as political activities intensify.
“This is now your home, Mr Chairman. We will keep the APC active and fully functional in Rivers State, and every need of the party will be taken care of,” he assured.
His defection represents a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State and is expected to influence alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
