The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has officially announced the sudden and tragic passing of Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, an 18-year-old Part Three medical student. According to the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the student reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

A roommate noted that Timilehin was still active around 2:00 AM, having opened the door for a peer shortly before the incident.

In response to the news, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire expressed profound grief on behalf of the university community, describing the loss of such a promising young life as a tragedy beyond words.

He acknowledged the void left in the College of Health Sciences, noting that Timilehin was a dedicated student who had committed himself to the noble goal of healing others.

The university has assured the public that it is working with the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances of the death through standard medical procedures. Additionally, the management is providing emotional support and counseling for students and staff affected by the loss. The institution has called for calm and solidarity during this period of mourning, offering prayers for the bereaved family and the repose of the student’s soul.
