A cyclist was killed on Monday after colliding with a DAF articulated truck along Airport Road in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the accident occurred beneath the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Bridge, around the traffic signal corridor.

In a statement posted on X, LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, explained that both the cyclist and the truck were coming from the Maryland axis when the cyclist reportedly failed to keep a safe distance while approaching the roundabout under the bridge.

According to him, the cyclist was crushed by the truck and died instantly from the injuries sustained.

Taofiq added that LASTMA officials at the scene arrested the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to escape, and handed him over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and possible prosecution.

He also said officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were invited to evacuate the corpse, while efforts were made to ease traffic and ensure public safety.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed sadness and condoled with the victim’s family.

He advised cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to be cautious and obey traffic rules, warning them against using major highways where the risk of accidents is high.

Giwa noted that the state government has continued public sensitisation campaigns to educate cyclists and other vulnerable road users on safety measures, including restricting their movement to inner roads.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety enforcement and public awareness, urging all road users to comply with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable deaths.
