Tragedy struck in Oyo State as a 45-year-old man lost his life while attempting to rescue a goat from a deep well in Saki, while another man, identified as Shina Adedeji, also died after falling into a well in Ogbomoso.

The Oyo State Fire Service confirmed that the bodies of the two men were recovered from separate locations in the state on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the Fire Service, Moroof Akinwande, the first incident occurred on Monday night at the Mokola area of Saki West Local Government Area.

He explained that the agency received a distress call at about 10:23 p.m. that a man had entered a well to rescue a goat but became trapped.

Firefighters, led by Principal Fire Superintendent II Kolade Taiwo, were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, the officers discovered that the man, believed to be about 45 years old, was stuck inside the deep well. Despite swift rescue efforts, he was later confirmed dead after his body was recovered.

“The incident occurred when the man willingly entered the well in an attempt to save a goat, during which he became trapped,” Akinwande said.

The second incident happened on Tuesday morning at Aaje Ikose area of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area. The Fire Service said it received a rescue call at about 9:45 a.m. regarding a man who had fallen into a well.

Fire officers led by Chief Fire Manager Oladejo responded promptly and recovered the body of the victim, identified as 30-year-old Shina Adedeji.
Akinwande revealed that Adedeji was trapped in the well, which reportedly contained ammonia gas, while trying to retrieve a fetcher.

Following the incidents, the Fire Service chairman cautioned residents to always prioritise their safety and avoid entering confined spaces without proper equipment or professional assistance.

“Life has no duplicate,” he warned, urging the public to seek help from emergency services rather than taking dangerous risks.

The latest tragedies come barely weeks after the Fire Service recovered the body of a 33-year-old man from a deep well at a filling station in Ibadan, where he reportedly became trapped while attempting to clean debris.
