The Federal Government has appointed a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The appointment was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.
According to the statement, the new pro-chancellor brings extensive legislative and diplomatic experience, as well as a strong commitment to educational development, to the role.
Olarewaju noted that the appointee previously served as Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, where he demonstrated notable leadership and dedication to democratic governance.
He also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico in June 2021, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama, contributing to Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements and international relations.
The statement added that the new pro-chancellor is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, where he obtained a degree in Law, giving him a deep understanding of the institution’s heritage and vision.
A native of Ede in Osun State, the appointee was described as widely respected for humility, accessibility, and strong interpersonal relationships.
The university expressed confidence in the ability of the new council chairman to provide visionary leadership and work effectively with council members, management, staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders to advance the institution’s mission and global reputation.
The new pro-chancellor succeeds the immediate past chairman of the governing council, Siyan Oyeweso, who died in December 2025 at the age of 64.
