American rap star Nicki Minaj has threatened to take legal action against Nigerian social media influencer Dr Penking following a dispute on the social media platform X over alleged cyberbullying and copyright infringement.
The controversy started on Saturday after Dr Penking posted an old video of the rapper on X with a caption suggesting that the 43-year-old music star should retire. In the post, he wrote that Minaj should “understand that she has gotten old and retire.”
The remark quickly drew attention online and triggered a response from the rapper.
In a tweet that has since been deleted, Minaj questioned whether the influencer had obtained permission to share the video and accused him of using the clip to harass her online. She also warned that he had been added to a lawsuit she intends to file.
“Do you have permission to use this video that I filmed years ago to harass me on this or any platform? You’ve just been added to the suit,” the rapper wrote.
Responding to the threat of legal action, Dr Penking maintained that he had done nothing wrong and said he was prepared to face any legal challenge.
According to him, freedom of speech allows him to express his personal opinion, including his view about the rapper’s career.
“Tell Nicki Minaj that my team and I are ready and eagerly anticipating her papers,” he wrote. “Freedom of speech and expression is recognised in constitutions around the world, and I have the right to express my opinion.”
He added that his comment was based on publicly available information about the rapper’s age, insisting that his statement was not intended as harassment.
“There is nothing harassing about this. It is publicly accessible information on Wikipedia. Should she retire? I think she should. That’s my personal opinion and I stand by it. People can agree or disagree, but I will not be bullied or intimidated by Nicki Minaj or any other celebrity,” he said.
