The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has confirmed that a political gathering organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Bakassi Local Government Area was disrupted by suspected political thugs.

The confirmation was made on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, Sunday Eitokpah, while reacting to a viral video circulating online that captured the incident.

In the video, one of the suspected thugs could be heard instructing others to destroy items at the venue, claiming that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had been actively working in the area while the ADC was absent.

According to Eitokpah, the disruption occurred on Saturday just as the political event was about to begin.

He explained that a group of hoodlums suddenly appeared and began destroying items that had been arranged for the gathering, including canopies, chairs, and sound equipment.

The police spokesperson added that security operatives quickly moved in to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating into a larger crisis.

“Officers and members of the tactical team are already at the scene. The programme could not continue because of the disruption. Given the chaotic nature of the incident and the sensitivity of the area, no arrests have been made for now,” he said.

This development comes only days after a similar disruption affected ADC activities in Calabar on Tuesday.

Following that earlier incident, the party raised concerns, alleging that there were attempts by some individuals to take control of its structure in the state.
