Saraki celebrates Obasanjo at 89, describes him as ‘living manuscript of Nigeria’s history’

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing the elder statesman as a “living manuscript” of Nigeria’s history.

In a congratulatory message shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday, Saraki praised Obasanjo’s enduring influence and contributions to the country’s development.

He wrote, “History is often written in the past tense, but the life of our dear former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, remains a living manuscript of the Nigerian story—still defying the odds and still demanding our attention.”

Saraki also offered prayers for the former military head of state and civilian president, celebrating not only his longevity but also the continued relevance of his voice in national affairs.

“And so, Baba, as you mark another year, we celebrate not just the length of your years but the relentless relevance of your voice,” Saraki said.

“In times of national uncertainty, may your wisdom remain a trusted compass, and may your legendary wit remain as sharp as ever. Happy 89th birthday, Your Excellency. May God grant you continued strength, sound health, and peace in the years ahead.”

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also felicitated Obasanjo on his birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose “towering influence” continues to shape national discourse.

Tinubu commended the former leader’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly through his books and regular interventions on national issues, which he said reflect deep patriotism and commitment to nation-building.

Speaking on his health and longevity, Obasanjo reportedly expressed confidence that God has a purpose for keeping him alive and in good condition at 89.

He dismissed those wishing him dead, saying he would remain strong and active for as long as God permits.

“God has assured me He has more for me to do on earth, and He has given me the wherewithal to do it. I dey kampe as usual,” Obasanjo was quoted as saying.
