Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami CF with immediate effect, citing personal reasons, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

His sudden departure comes on the back of a remarkable debut season in charge, where he guided the club featuring global star Lionel Messi to its first-ever MLS Cup triumph, capping off one of the most impressive campaigns in the league’s history.

In a statement released by the club, Mascherano expressed appreciation to the management, players, and supporters for their backing throughout his tenure.

He described his time at the club as unforgettable, thanking the players for their commitment and the fans fondly referred to as “La Familia” for their unwavering support. He added that he would always cherish the memories of winning the club’s first major title.

Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, praised Mascherano’s impact, noting that his contribution to the club’s success would not be forgotten. He commended the Argentine for his leadership, dedication, and role in delivering historic achievements, including the MLS Cup victory and a strong showing at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Mascherano, who was appointed in January 2025 without prior senior managerial experience, quickly transformed the team into champions. Under his guidance, Inter Miami also secured the Eastern Conference title and enjoyed a record-breaking season, scoring over 100 goals across all competitions.

On the global stage, he led the club to a historic run at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where they became the first MLS side to reach the knockout stages.
Despite his exit, the club expressed confidence in building on the strong foundation he leaves behind as they prepare for the future.
