The Nigeria Police Force has continued investigations into the killing of a suspect in Delta State, as the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the incident remains difficult to explain.
Edafe made the remark during a live appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday while reacting to a viral video showing a suspect being shot by a police officer in public.
The incident, widely described as an extrajudicial killing, reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun acted on intelligence provided by members of the public.
According to police authorities, the deceased, Mene Ogidi, 28, was arrested while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel suspected to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
The police said a team was deployed to take the suspect into custody, but the officer leading the operation, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted outside established procedures.
“In clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, [he] discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” the command had stated earlier.
Reacting to the development, Edafe admitted that the command was still grappling with the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“Since my six years of public relations, this is my most difficult moment.
“Because having an incident that cannot be explained is very difficult. There is no explanation for this. That policeman, I just don’t get what I would say was wrong with him.
“Police cannot attribute the problem to spirituality, but that may not be far from it. Because that is the only explanation one can give to what he did,” Edafe stated.
Following the incident, the officer involved has been arrested and transferred to Abuja for further investigation, as internal disciplinary procedures continue.
The viral video has sparked widespread reactions across social media and heightened concerns over police conduct.
The Nigeria Police Force, however, reiterated its stance against extrajudicial actions, assuring the public that due process will be followed in addressing the case.
