Former Manchester City F.C. striker Edin Džeko is on course to make history after being named in Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The veteran forward, who currently plays for FC Schalke 04, is set to become one of the few outfield players aged 40 or above to feature at the World Cup.

Only Cameroon legend Roger Milla has previously achieved the feat, having played and scored at the 1994 World Cup after turning 40.

Several goalkeepers have also featured at the tournament beyond the age of 40, including Essam El Hadary, Faryd Mondragón and Dino Zoff.

Džeko, who has earned 148 international caps for Bosnia, played a key role in his country’s qualification campaign, featuring in seven of their eight qualifying matches as well as the play-off fixtures that secured their place at the tournament.

The striker also scored his 73rd international goal during Bosnia’s play-off semi-final victory over Wales.

Bosnia are the first nation to officially unveil their 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The tournament will mark only Bosnia’s second appearance at the World Cup finals. They have been drawn in Group B alongside Canada men’s national soccer team, Qatar national football team and Switzerland national football team.

Meanwhile, football icons Luka Modrić and Cristiano Ronaldo are also expected to feature at this year’s tournament despite being 40 and 41 respectively.
