Labour Party inaugurates screening committee for 2027 primaries
The Labour Party has inaugurated an eight-member screening committee to oversee the screening of aspirants seeking elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was disclosed in a public notice jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma, on Friday in Abuja.
According to the notice, the committee was constituted in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution and the electoral guidelines for the 2026 primaries.
The committee, which will be chaired by Usman, comprises Mrs Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke and Dr Olu Ayewo as members, while Obioma will serve as secretary.
The party stated that the committee would screen aspirants contesting for presidential, governorship and National Assembly positions and recommend qualified candidates for the party’s primaries.
It added that the committee would verify the authenticity of documents submitted by aspirants and ensure compliance with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the timetable released by the party, the screening of House of Assembly and governorship aspirants is scheduled for May 20, while National Assembly and presidential aspirants will be screened on May 22.
The Labour Party also urged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with integrity as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
