Argentina national football team manager Lionel Scaloni has released a 55-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with captain Lionel Messi once again headlining the list as he prepares for what could be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

The squad, unveiled ahead of the tournament in North America, blends experienced members of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team with several emerging talents from Europe and beyond.

However, the announcement has sparked debate after several high-profile players were left out of the preliminary list.

Among the most surprising omissions is Roma forward Paulo Dybala, who has earned over 40 international caps, alongside former Atlético Madrid attacker Ángel Correa, now playing in Mexico, and West Ham striker Valentín Castellanos.

Their absence suggests a possible tactical reshaping under Scaloni, who appears to be leaning towards a younger, more dynamic squad.

New faces such as Parma’s Mateo Pellegrino and Roma youngster Matías Soulé have been included, reflecting a growing emphasis on fresh attacking options.

The Premier League also has strong representation, with Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez and Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández both making the list. Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho also returns to the national setup after a long absence.

Scaloni has additionally handed opportunities to exciting prospects such as Real Madrid teenager Franco Mastantuono and Girona playmaker Claudio Echeverri, signalling a clear investment in Argentina’s next generation.

In goal, World Cup hero Emiliano Martínez remains a key figure, while Gerónimo Rulli is also included. The battle for the third goalkeeper spot is expected to be between Juan Musso and Walter Benítez.

Defensively, Scaloni has also explored domestic talent from Argentina’s local league, with Boca Juniors’ Lautaro Di Lollo and Getafe defender Zaid Romero among the surprise inclusions.

The provisional squad will now be trimmed to a final 26-man team before the deadline, meaning several players still have everything to play for as Argentina begin shaping their title defence.
