Portugal midfielder Joao Neves has come under criticism on social media following comments he made about Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 21-year-old, however, also made headlines for his performance on the pitch after becoming one of Portugal’s youngest-ever goalscorers at the FIFA World Cup.
Neves found the net in Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo, opening the scoring in the sixth minute with a well-placed header from Pedro Neto’s delivery.
The goal placed him among Portugal’s youngest World Cup scorers, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos in the country’s history at the tournament.
Despite the milestone, attention later shifted to Neves’ post-match remarks about Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking after the game, Neves praised Ronaldo’s influence but stressed that every player in the squad contributes equally.
“We know what Cristiano has done for Portugal, for our national team and for football globally. But at this moment, he is here to help the team just like everyone else,” Neves said.
The comments quickly sparked reactions online, with some fans interpreting the statement as dismissive of Ronaldo’s status and achievements.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez later defended Neves, saying the midfielder’s comments had been misunderstood.
According to Martinez, Ronaldo’s place in Portuguese football history remains unquestionable.
He described the veteran forward as one of the greatest players in football history, highlighting his records, achievements, and continued commitment to the national team.
Ronaldo was unable to score in the match as Portugal were held by DR Congo in their opening Group K fixture.
Portugal will now turn attention to their next World Cup outing as they seek their first victory of the tournament.
