The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that democratic governance has failed to translate into improved living conditions for many Nigerians.
In a Democracy Day message addressed to Nigerians, the party said the success of democracy should be measured by its impact on citizens’ welfare rather than the number of years since the country returned to civilian rule.
The statement, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged Nigerians to reflect on whether their lives have improved in terms of security, economic well-being and confidence in government.
According to the ADC, the answer to those questions remains negative, citing persistent insecurity, economic hardship and declining trust in public institutions.
The opposition party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing to adequately address the country’s security challenges, claiming that many communities continue to face attacks, kidnappings and other criminal activities.
It lamented that insecurity had disrupted livelihoods, displaced residents and created widespread fear across the country, while questioning the government’s capacity to guarantee the safety of citizens.
The ADC also expressed concern over the nation’s economic situation, noting that rising costs of food, transportation, healthcare, housing and education have placed severe pressure on households.
The party said many workers are struggling with declining purchasing power, while small businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to survive under current economic conditions.
It further highlighted the challenges facing young Nigerians, stating that unemployment and limited opportunities have left many uncertain about their future, with a growing number seeking opportunities outside the country.
The party attributed the country’s challenges to what it described as poor governance and ineffective policies, insisting that the worsening security and economic conditions are the result of leadership failures.
According to the ADC, the government has continued to ask Nigerians to endure hardship without providing practical solutions to the country’s pressing problems.
As part of its proposed alternative agenda, the party advocated a security strategy driven by intelligence, technology and community participation, while calling for greater accountability in the use of security resources.
It also pledged support for economic policies aimed at reducing the cost of living, lowering energy costs, promoting agricultural productivity, supporting small businesses and protecting vulnerable citizens.
The ADC further called for reforms to strengthen transparency, accountability and public trust in democratic institutions.
The party maintained that government performance should be assessed based on tangible improvements in the lives of citizens, particularly in the areas of security, economic prosperity and national development.
It added that the significance of the June 12 struggle would be best honoured through efforts to build a democratic system capable of delivering opportunity, stability and a better quality of life for all Nigerians.
