Croatia revived their FIFA World Cup campaign with a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, thanks to a second-half winner from substitute Ante Budimir.
The experienced forward came off the bench to make the difference, scoring the decisive goal and keeping Croatia’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive while confirming Panama’s early exit from the tournament.
After suffering defeat in their opening Group L match against England, Croatia entered the contest under pressure to respond. However, they found Panama difficult to break down during a tense and largely uneventful first half that produced few clear scoring opportunities.
Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic made key tactical adjustments at the break, introducing Andrej Kramaric and Budimir in place of Petar Musa and Josko Gvardiol, tha changes that quickly transformed the game.
Just nine minutes after entering the pitch, Budimir delivered the breakthrough. Josip Stanisic combined brilliantly with Mario Pasalic down the right flank before sending a dangerous low cross across the face of goal. The delivery travelled untouched to the far post, where Budimir was perfectly positioned to guide the ball home and register his seventh international goal.
Croatia nearly doubled their advantage moments later. Pasalic found himself one-on-one with Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera following a quick counterattack, but his attempted chip lacked enough height and was saved. He then sent the rebound wide from a difficult angle.
Despite the missed opportunity, Croatia remained in control and comfortably protected their slim lead to secure all three points.
The result puts Croatia in a strong position heading into their final group match and boosts their chances of progressing to the last 32.
For Panama, back-to-back defeats mean their World Cup journey ends at the group stage. Their final fixture against England will now be played only for pride.
