Nigerian media personality and actor Denrele Edun has opened up about his symbolic decision to “marry himself” as part of activities marking his 45th birthday celebration.
The entertainer, whose full name is Adenrele Oluwafemi Edun, stirred conversations online after sharing a video on June 13 announcing the unusual self-marriage ceremony, attracting reactions across social media.
Speaking further through a post shared on his Instagram story on Tuesday, Denrele explained that the gesture was not a literal marriage but a personal tribute to his life journey and everything he had endured over the years.
Reflecting on turning 45, he said the symbolic act was his way of celebrating the one constant presence throughout every phase of his life.
According to him, years of navigating challenges, reinvention, criticism, resilience, heartbreak and achievements shaped the decision.
“Till death didn’t do us part. So I married myself. After 45 years of chaos, glitter, survival, reinvention, controversy, resilience, heartbreak and triumph, I remain the greatest love story I’ve ever known,” he wrote.
Denrele added that the self-union represented acceptance and appreciation of every version of himself that contributed to his growth.
“I am the bride and the groom. And I am marrying every version of myself that fought to get here. Today, I marry the only person who never left my side: me,” he stated.
Popular for his bold fashion choices and unconventional public image, Denrele ended the message by describing himself as “The Bride. The Groom. The Happily Ever After.”
The announcement generated mixed but largely positive reactions online, with many fans praising the message as one centred on self-love, resilience and personal growth as the entertainer celebrated the milestone age.
