The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, has reaffirmed the commitment of local government authorities to strengthening security across the state through the distribution of additional security patrol vehicles to security agencies.

Speaking during the distribution ceremony held on Saturday in Osun State, Abiodun described the initiative as a practical demonstration of government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across communities.

According to him, the exercise marks the completion of an earlier promise to support security agencies with operational vehicles to improve surveillance and rapid response across the state.

“This event goes beyond the distribution of vehicles. It represents our collective commitment to the safety, security and well-being of the people of Osun State,” he said.

The ALGON chairman noted that security remains a foundation for development, stressing that meaningful progress cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of fear and instability.

He explained that local governments, being the closest tier of government to the people, understand the unique security concerns within their communities and are therefore better positioned to support interventions aimed at maintaining law and order.

Abiodun commended the efforts of security agencies operating across Osun State and acknowledged their continued dedication to safeguarding residents.

He also referenced the killing of a local government official, Hon. Remi Abass, in February 2025, describing the incident as painful and emphasising the need to prevent a recurrence of such acts, especially ahead of future electoral activities in the state.

The ALGON chairman linked the intervention to increasing local government autonomy, arguing that greater control over local resources and decision-making has enabled councils to respond more effectively to community needs.

According to him, autonomy has strengthened the ability of local administrations to design and implement grassroots-driven initiatives, including security support programmes.

Receiving the vehicles on behalf of security agencies, the Commissioner of Police expressed appreciation to the leadership of ALGON and acknowledged the support of stakeholders, including the APC delegation and representatives at the event.

The police chief described the intervention as more than the mere distribution of operational vehicles, saying it represents a deliberate effort to strengthen Osun State’s security architecture and enhance public safety across communities.

He noted that security remains a shared responsibility and assured residents that the patrol vehicles would significantly improve operational efficiency, mobility and intelligence gathering across the state.

According to him, the security agencies would ensure that the vehicles are properly deployed and used strictly for the purpose of safeguarding lives and property.

The police commissioner also commended security personnel for their dedication and commitment to service, stressing that greater achievements can only be attained through unity of purpose among all stakeholders.

Abiodun further urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to sustain peace and security across the state.

Addressing beneficiaries of the vehicles, he called for proper maintenance and responsible deployment to ensure the initiative delivers lasting impact.

The ALGON chairman also appreciated stakeholders and the Federal Government for supporting efforts aimed at improving security and promoting peace across Osun State.

He concluded by expressing confidence that stronger collaboration between government, local authorities and security agencies would further enhance stability and development across communities.
