Political leaders and grassroots advocates on Friday gathered to participate in the third edition of the Osun Women in Politics Summit.
The Summit, held is Osogbo, is designed to challenge disenfranchment stereotypes and other social norms hindering the women’s inclusion in governance.
This year’s event tthemd “Recognizing Titans, and Empowering Women for Political Leadership” was held to commemorate 2026 Democracy Day.
In her opening address, the Convener and President of Osun Women in Politics, Nafisat Opeyemi Solihu said the Summit focused on recognizing past female leaders while providing the necessary encouragement and strategy to help women take up leadership roles and perform excellently well.
Solihu said the initiative is designed to dismantle the barriers holding women back and mobilize them to actively contest elections and shape the future of society.
“You all agree with me that there are a lot of stereotypes that have been disempowering and disenfranchising participation of women in politics. And I know so well that that is one of the essences of this event. For us to be able to come together and look at how best we can strengthen women inclusion, not only in politics, but governance,” Solihu said.
She noted that the summit is not just about the future but a platform to honour trailblazers.
“We have recognized the women who come before us, the women who stood strong, worked hard, and opened doors for others to follow. We call them our titans because they have shown courage, delivered excellent service, and left footprints for the next generations. At the same time, we are looking ahead. We want more women to believe in themselves, get involved in politics, speak up, and contest elections,” Solihu charged.
“To every woman here, please remember this: Your thoughts matter, your ideas matter, and your dreams are valid. Do not be afraid to step forward,” she added.
Also speaking, the keynote speaker at the event, Representative Bamidele Salam described female inclusion as a necessity, stating that government cannot properly function without the diverse perspectives of women.
Salam, who was represented by Seyi Adebiyi, noted that Governor Ademola Adeleke has made tremendous moves to ensure inclusive governance by actively appointing and supporting women in his administration.
He said, “Women should get more involved in politics because their participation strengthens democracy and ensures that government decisions reflect the interests of the entire population.
“Women often bring unique insights on issues such as healthcare, education, child welfare, gender equality, and community development. Issues such as maternal health, gender-based violence, work-based discrimination, and equal opportunities are more likely to receive attention when women are actively involved in policy-making,” he noted.
“Inclusive governance often leads to policies that promote broader economic growth, and social progress, benefiting society as a whole. When women take part in leadership and decision-making, society benefits from diverse perspectives, better policies, and better.
Among the awardees are Erelu Olusola Obada, Former Minister of Defense and Former Deputy Governor of Osun state who represented by Alhaja Fausat Sarumi, Special Adviser to Governor on Asset Management and former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Osun State, Mrs Sola Adeoti and Comrade Mrs. Iyabo Olanrewaju Adeyemi.
