Cape Verde produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding tournament favourites Spain to a dramatic 0-0 draw in their Group H clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday.
Making their first-ever appearance at the World Cup, the African nation delivered a disciplined and fearless performance to frustrate one of football’s traditional powerhouses in front of 67,640 spectators in Atlanta.
Widely considered one of the tournament’s biggest underdogs, Cape Verde, the third-smallest nation by population to ever compete at a World Cup with fewer than 500,000 people showed resilience and determination to earn a memorable point.
The standout performer was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who turned 40 just days earlier and delivered a series of outstanding saves to keep Spain at bay.
The experienced shot-stopper denied Mikel Oyarzabal with a brilliant fingertip stop, reacted sharply to block Ferran Torres from close range, and later produced key saves to frustrate Aymeric Laporte, Mikel Merino and Marc Cucurella.
Defender Pico Lopes was equally influential at the back, producing a decisive late intervention to deny Oyarzabal what looked to be a certain winner in the closing stages.
Despite dominating possession and creating the better opportunities, Spain lacked their usual cutting edge. Torres missed the clearest chance of the first half when he struck the crossbar from close range, while second-half substitute Lamine Yamal was unable to inspire a breakthrough.
Cape Verde nearly completed an extraordinary upset late in the match when Diney Borges found space inside the box from a rare corner kick, but his effort was blocked and safely gathered by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon.
When the final whistle sounded, Cape Verde’s players celebrated wildly after securing a result that could go down as one of the most memorable moments in the country’s football history.
For Spain, the draw represents an early setback in Group H, while for Cape Verde, it marks a historic statement on football’s biggest stage.
