Stop Pleading for Criminals, It Undermines Justice — Adejobi Warns Nigerians

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Delta State, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has cautioned Nigerians against lobbying security agencies to secure the release of suspected criminals, describing the practice as harmful to the fight against crime.

Adejobi, a former spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, issued the warning in a post shared on his official X account on Monday, where he stressed the need for citizens to support law enforcement efforts rather than interfere with the justice process.

According to him, individuals who pressure the police or other security agencies to release suspects or overlook criminal acts are contributing to the problem of insecurity in the country.

“I have always maintained my principles when it comes to fighting crime and criminality. Don’t bother contacting me to plead for a criminal. It is shameful, and it will not work,” he wrote.

The senior police officer argued that anyone seeking special treatment for suspects or attempting to influence investigations is indirectly encouraging criminal behaviour.

“Anyone begging or mounting pressure on the police and security agencies to release, pardon or overlook the actions of a criminal is also a criminal,” he stated.

Adejobi called on Nigerians and security institutions to remain steadfast in their collective efforts to curb crime, stressing that the fight against criminality requires cooperation, integrity and a firm commitment to justice.

“There are no two ways about it. We must remain resolute and united in tackling crime and other social vices in our society,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when security agencies are facing increasing pressure over cases involving kidnappings, terrorism and other violent crimes across parts of the country.

The warning also follows reports that some terrorist groups have demanded the release of detained members in exchange for abducted victims, including a retired Major General and schoolchildren from Oyo State.

Adejobi’s comments underscore growing concerns among security officials about attempts by influential individuals and groups to interfere with criminal investigations and prosecution processes.

He maintained that allowing offenders to evade justice only weakens the rule of law and undermines efforts to build a safer society.
