A trailer conveying iron rods crashed into the perimeter fence of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, in the early hours of Thursday after reportedly losing control along the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway.
The accident occurred near Finbarrs Road, close to the Abia State High Court, causing severe traffic congestion on the busy route.
According to information gathered by PUNCH Online, the trailer developed a mechanical fault while climbing a hill and rolled backwards before crashing into the hospital’s fence.
The driver, who declined to disclose his identity, said the incident happened around 2:00 a.m.
He explained that the vehicle lost compression while ascending the hill, making it impossible to maintain control as it reversed and rammed into the fence.
The crash left the trailer partially blocking the federal highway, resulting in heavy traffic delays during the morning rush hour as motorists struggled to navigate the affected area.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualty had been officially confirmed. Efforts were ongoing to remove the trailer from the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
Further details are expected.
