The Netherlands delivered a dominant performance to defeat Sweden 5-1 in their FIFA World Cup Group F clash at NRG Stadium on Saturday evening, boosting their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
Backed by an impressive attacking display, the Dutch side recorded their first win of the tournament in front of 68,777 spectators, with Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scoring twice in a one-sided encounter.
The Oranje wasted no time in taking control of the match as Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute before doubling the lead 12 minutes later with another clinical finish to put Ronald Koeman’s men firmly in command.
Sweden struggled to contain the Dutch attack throughout the first half and headed into the break with plenty of work to do.
The Netherlands returned from halftime with even greater intensity, and Gakpo took over the spotlight. The Liverpool forward struck in the 47th and 54th minutes to extend the advantage and effectively end any hopes of a Swedish comeback.
Gakpo’s brace also saw him continue his impressive World Cup form, moving level with Dutch legend Robin van Persie for the most group-stage goals scored by a Netherlands player at the tournament.
Sweden eventually found a response when Anthony Elanga pulled one back in the 59th minute, but the goal served only as consolation.
Substitute Crysencio Summerville completed the rout late in the game, finding the net in the 89th minute to cap off a commanding Dutch display.
After opening their campaign with a draw against Japan, the victory moves the Netherlands onto four points in Group F and places qualification for the next round firmly in their hands. Sweden, who had started strongly with a win over Tunisia, will now look to bounce back in their remaining fixtures.
