Chelsea have reached an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign experienced England striker Danny Welbeck on a two-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement on Wednesday, revealing that both clubs had finalised the deal and that personal terms had already been agreed with the 35-year-old forward.
According to Romano, Welbeck is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days before completing the transfer and joining Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong.
The move will see one of the Premier League’s most experienced forwards add another chapter to a distinguished career that has taken him from Manchester United to Arsenal, Watford and Brighton.
A graduate of Manchester United’s renowned academy, Welbeck broke into the senior team under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the Premier League title and establishing himself as one of England’s brightest attacking talents. He later enjoyed productive spells with Arsenal and Brighton, earning praise for his pace, intelligent movement, tireless work ethic and ability to deliver in crucial moments.
Across his club career, Welbeck has scored more than 120 senior goals in all competitions while making well over 500 appearances. He has also been a regular for England, earning more than 40 international caps and scoring 16 goals, featuring at major tournaments including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.
Despite battling injuries during different stages of his career, Welbeck rediscovered his best form with Brighton, enjoying an impressive 2025/26 campaign in which he finished as the club’s leading scorer and once again demonstrated his quality in front of goal.
Chelsea view the veteran striker as a valuable addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad, believing his experience, leadership qualities and winning mentality will strengthen the team’s attacking options while providing guidance for the club’s younger forwards.
The Blues have been active in the transfer market this summer as Alonso continues to reshape the squad ahead of the new season, with Welbeck expected to add proven Premier League quality and valuable experience to Chelsea’s frontline.
Insightlinks Sport Arena gathered that Welbeck’s arrival could also pave the way for the departures of Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap as Chelsea continue trimming their squad before the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
