Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, better known as Portable, has stirred fresh controversy after accusing some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars of allowing wealth and fame to diminish their creativity.
In a video shared online, the “Zazu” crooner claimed that artists such as Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Olamide have become disconnected from the realities of everyday Nigerians.
According to Portable, many of their recent songs focus heavily on women, luxury and extravagant lifestyles, rather than delivering messages capable of inspiring or educating listeners.
He argued that music should go beyond entertainment by motivating people and promoting positive values, adding that financial success should not cause artists to lose sight of their responsibility to society.
Portable also urged his colleagues to embrace more conscious and gospel-themed music, stressing that wealth is not the ultimate measure of success.
Expressing his concerns, he said, “I noticed that Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide don’t praise God in their songs; they only sing about ladies. Is it because they already have money and believe they can’t fall? Their songs have no motivation and no sensible lyrics, just women and vanity.
“Make conscious music. We are tired of songs about frivolities. I am also a musician. You all should do better.”
The singer’s remarks have since generated reactions on social media, with fans divided over his criticism of some of Nigeria’s most celebrated music stars.
