Award-winning Nollywood actress, producer and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed that the remarkable success she enjoys today was built on years of relentless hard work, discipline and personal sacrifice.

The box office record holder, whose films have continued to dominate Nigerian cinemas, said every milestone in her career came at a cost, as she dedicated nearly all her time and energy to perfecting her craft.

Speaking during a recent interview with BellaNaija, Akindele reflected on the demanding journey that transformed her into one of Africa’s most successful filmmakers, saying she had to put her personal life on hold to pursue excellence.

According to her, while many people celebrate her achievements today, few understand the countless hours she invested in research, scriptwriting and film production behind the scenes.

“It is a lot of work,” she said. “When I say a lot of work, I mean giving your all. I looked back and asked myself why it took me so long to start taking care of myself after people kept saying I looked beautiful.”

The actress admitted that she became so consumed by work that she neglected herself, explaining that she rarely styled her hair except for major red-carpet events and deliberately stayed away from parties and social visits.

“I abandoned myself for work. I don’t attend parties or visit people. Everything was about research, writing and work. I was completely immersed in it,” she said.

Akindele noted that only recently has she begun to create time for herself by embracing self-care, skincare routines and a healthier work-life balance.

She stressed that the sacrifices eventually paid off, pointing to the commercial success of her latest movie, Behind The Scene, which grossed an impressive ₦2.7 billion at the Nigerian box office.

“For me to achieve all of this and for my last movie to make ₦2.7 billion, it took a lot of sacrifices,” she added.

Akindele’s story serves as a testament to the years of perseverance, resilience and unwavering commitment that turned her from an aspiring actress into one of Nollywood’s biggest success stories, with each new film continuing to raise the bar for the Nigerian film industry.
