Barcelona president Joan Laporta has described Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain as a celebration of the club’s famed La Masia academy, saying the showdown perfectly symbolizes the transition from Lionel Messi to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Speaking in New York ahead of the final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, Laporta expressed pride that two of Barcelona’s greatest products will headline football’s biggest match, with Messi captaining Argentina and Yamal leading Spain’s new generation.

The Barcelona chief said the final is more than a contest for the World Cup trophy, describing it as a showcase of the club’s enduring football philosophy and its ability to develop world-class talents.

“Messi is the past and the present, while Lamine is the present and the future,” Laporta told RAC1.

“I’m delighted that Messi has reached another World Cup final because he remains a source of pride for La Masia. At the same time, seeing Lamine Yamal emerge as one of the world’s brightest talents makes us equally proud.”

Laporta noted that Barcelona’s influence will be visible throughout the final, with eight current Barcelona players expected to feature for Spain, while Messi, the club’s greatest-ever player, leads Argentina in pursuit of back-to-back World Cup titles.

He also singled out several Barcelona stars, including Pau Cubarsí, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Eric Garcia and Joan Garcia, praising their performances during the tournament.

“As Barcelona president, I am proud that so many players developed at our club are representing their countries on the biggest stage. It shows that La Masia continues to produce exceptional footballers,” he said.

Laporta described the Argentina-Spain clash as a meeting of two contrasting football philosophies.

According to him, Argentina’s physical and aggressive style under Lionel Scaloni will be tested against Spain’s possession-based approach, which he believes closely reflects Barcelona’s traditional identity.

“At national team level, this is the biggest match any player can experience. Argentina are more aggressive, while Spain play a more cohesive game that resembles Barcelona’s style. Our football philosophy continues to be recognised around the world,” he added.

Sunday’s final has already captured global attention, not only because it will determine the 2026 world champions but also because it brings together two generations of Barcelona icons.

Nearly two decades after Messi famously appeared in a UNICEF charity photoshoot bathing baby Lamine Yamal, the Argentine legend and the Spanish teenager are now set to face each other for the first time in a senior international match, adding another compelling chapter to one of football’s most remarkable stories.

For Laporta, regardless of who lifts the trophy, the final represents another triumph for Barcelona’s famed academy and its lasting impact on world football.
