Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has urged political actors in Nigeria to avoid turning every national issue into political contestation, warning that constant attacks on institutions especially the judiciary system could weaken democratic values.
The governor made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday while reacting to developments surrounding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
His comments followed a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which overturned an earlier judgment that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.
Speaking on the controversy, Sani argued that public attitudes toward the judiciary often change depending on whether court decisions align with political interests.
According to him, politicians frequently celebrate the courts when rulings favour them but become critical of the judicial system when outcomes are unfavourable.
He stressed that such selective confidence in the judiciary is unhealthy for democracy and called for greater respect for the rule of law.
Sani noted that many political figures currently involved in debates around the NDC matter had previously benefited from judicial decisions at different points in their political careers.
He referenced Peter Obi as an example, pointing out that the former Anambra State governor had also emerged from significant judicial intervention during his political journey.
The governor maintained that democratic institutions should be respected consistently and not judged solely based on whether outcomes suit individual political interests.
