New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence that brighter days lie ahead for the club, assuring supporters that hard work, unity and commitment will be the foundation of his rebuilding project at Stamford Bridge.
The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach made the remarks after officially beginning his reign with the Blues, as players reported to Cobham Training Centre for the start of pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Alonso, who signed a four-year contract with Chelsea, takes charge following a disappointing 2025/26 season in which the London club finished 10th in the Premier League and missed out on qualification for European competitions.
Speaking about the challenge before him, the 44-year-old Spaniard said he was excited by the quality and potential within Chelsea’s squad, insisting that success would only come through discipline and collective effort.
“You can’t hold back anything. Everything is for the team. Hard work is a must. We need to create that culture, and it starts every day at Cobham,” Alonso said.
The former midfielder explained that Chelsea’s talented squad was one of the major reasons he accepted the job, adding that he hopes to build an attractive style of football capable of reconnecting the team with its supporters.
He described the opportunity to manage Chelsea as both an honour and a privilege, noting that the club’s rich history and tradition of success inspired him to embrace the challenge.
Alonso also acknowledged the frustrations experienced by Chelsea fans in recent seasons and pledged to restore the strong bond between the players and supporters.
“I know the energy this stadium can create, and we need to rebuild that connection. We want the fans to believe that good things will come if we stay together. Together, we can achieve great things in the coming years,” he said.
The Spanish tactician believes the timing of his move to England is ideal after successful coaching experiences in Germany and Spain.
According to him, he has long desired to test himself in the Premier League and believes Chelsea offers the perfect environment to continue his managerial development.
Chelsea’s new era will begin with an immediate test when Alonso leads the Blues in a West London derby against Fulham on August 24 in their opening Premier League fixture.
The encounter is expected to add extra intrigue, with Fulham now managed by Alonso’s former Liverpool and Real Madrid teammate, Alvaro Arbeloa, setting up a high-profile managerial battle in the opening round of the new season.
