Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused those in power of stealing Nigeria’s election, economy and resources, as he criticised the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the remarks on Tuesday while receiving ADC supporters from Osun State at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
“We are competing with thieves. They stole the election. Now they have stolen the economy. They have stolen everything,” Atiku said.
The former vice-president also faulted the removal of petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy had worsened economic hardship and pushed more Nigerians into poverty.
“The removal of subsidy has driven more Nigerians into poverty than at any other time in the history of this country,” he said.
Atiku reiterated his pledge to restore the petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027, insisting that Nigeria, despite its economic challenges, had enough resources to cater for the welfare of its citizens.
“On the question of subsidy, my position has not changed and will not change: I will restore it! A nation as blessed as ours has no business abandoning its citizens to hardship. Nigeria is rich enough to look after her own,” he said.
He further argued that the success of an economy should not be measured solely by government revenue but by the purchasing power and welfare of citizens.
“The wealth of a nation is not measured by how much government collects, but by how much the money in the pockets of its people can buy,” Atiku said.
According to him, the primary responsibility of government is to improve the welfare and security of citizens, adding that he would prioritise both if elected in 2027.
