Chelsea compounded Manchester United’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving manager Michael Carrick facing further questions about his future.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for the hosts in the 50th minute before Cole Palmer converted a penalty 14 minutes later to secure all three points for Xabi Alonso’s side.
United’s afternoon took a further turn for the worse when Lisandro Martinez was sent off in the 63rd minute after conceding the penalty, leaving the visitors to finish the game with 10 men.
The defeat extended United’s winless run, which had already reached eight matches before the encounter, and added to the pressure on Carrick, whose team had managed just one victory in their opening nine league matches.
United entered the weekend sitting 16th on the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone, following a disappointing run that included a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
Carrick, a former United midfielder who made 464 appearances for the club and won five Premier League titles during his playing career, returned to Old Trafford as head coach in January 2026. His initial impact earned him a permanent position, but the club’s current struggles have put his leadership under scrutiny.
The 45-year-old had been given an opportunity to steady the team after his successful start in charge, but the recent run of poor results has raised doubts about whether he can restore United to their expected level.
Despite the pressure, United supporters continued to show their affection for Carrick at Stamford Bridge. According to Sky Sports reporter Nick Wright, the manager went over to acknowledge the travelling fans after the match, who responded by singing his name.
However, the result has reportedly left his future in serious doubt, with the club facing growing concerns over its league position and performances.
For Alonso, the victory represents an important response after a difficult spell at Chelsea, which had included a 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham and elimination from the Carabao Cup following a penalty shootout loss to Liverpool.
The Spaniard arrived at Stamford Bridge in July 2026 with a reputation built on his remarkable achievements at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the club to its first Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season without losing a league match. His team also won the German Cup and reached the Europa League final.
Alonso’s managerial journey, however, has not been without setbacks. His subsequent spell at Real Madrid ended in January 2026, less than eight months after taking charge, following a difficult period at the Spanish club.
His appointment at Chelsea offered an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in the Premier League, where he had previously featured as a player for Liverpool.
The encounter also brought together two former midfielders whose playing careers were marked by success at the highest level. While Carrick built his legacy at Manchester United, Alonso enjoyed successful spells at Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich before establishing himself as one of Europe’s prominent young coaches.
But Saturday’s result underlined the contrasting situations facing the two managers: Alonso celebrated a home victory, while Carrick left Stamford Bridge with renewed uncertainty surrounding his position at Old Trafford.
