Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has opened up about her decision to keep her marriage away from the public eye, revealing that her fear and uncertainty about marriage influenced the way she handled her wedding.
Kadiri made the disclosure during a recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast, where she spoke about her personal life and why she has consistently maintained a high level of privacy around her family.
The actress said she had what she described as a “phobia of marriage” at the time and was constantly worried about making a decision that could eventually fall apart.
“I had a phobia of marriage. I was battling with the fear of the unknown and asking myself, ‘Am I going to make this decision and everything will now scatter?’” she said.
Kadiri explained that because of those fears, she was not comfortable making her marriage a public affair.
“So, I wasn’t really ready to have a public marriage, and my husband was okay with it,” she added.
The actress also said she deliberately kept the wedding small because she wanted to avoid unnecessary drama and attention surrounding her relationship.
According to her, she and her husband agreed to invite only 50 people to the ceremony, with each of them selecting 25 guests.
“I didn’t want a lot of drama regarding my relationship. That’s why my husband and I invited only 50 people to our wedding,” Kadiri said.
“Twenty-five people were invited by him, while 25 others were invited by me.
“If I were abroad, I guess we would have just probably walked to the registry and gotten married.”
Kadiri and her husband, Mr Ezerika, got married in a private ceremony in November 2018.
The couple welcomed their first daughter in August 2019 before their second daughter arrived in July 2022.
Despite her initial fears about marriage, Kadiri has largely kept her family life away from the spotlight while continuing to build her career in Nollywood as an actress and producer.
