Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has been appointed head coach of the Netherlands, becoming the first foreign manager to take charge of the Dutch national team in 48 years.
The 46-year-old Spaniard has signed a four-year contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup, succeeding Ronald Koeman, who left the position following the Netherlands’ disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup.
Xavi’s appointment marks a significant departure from the Netherlands’ long-standing preference for homegrown coaches. The last foreign manager to lead the national team was Austrian Ernst Happel, who guided the Dutch to the 1978 World Cup final.
The former Spain international now takes charge of a team with a rich footballing tradition but one that will be looking to rebuild its identity and compete more consistently at the highest level.
Xavi is expected to bring a possession-based and attacking philosophy to the Netherlands, drawing heavily on the football principles that shaped his career as a player and manager.
His coaching outlook has been strongly influenced by Dutch football, particularly the ideas associated with Johan Cruyff and Louis van Gaal. That familiarity with the country’s football culture is expected to help him introduce his philosophy while maintaining the technical and creative qualities traditionally associated with Dutch football.
The former Barcelona midfielder also brings experience of managing at the highest level. After beginning his managerial career with Al Sadd in Qatar, Xavi spent three seasons in charge of Barcelona, where he won the 2022/23 La Liga title before leaving the club in 2024.
His appointment also represents his first job as a national-team coach, making the Netherlands project a new challenge for the former World Cup winner.
Xavi is expected to assemble a coaching staff that could include former Netherlands and Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert as an assistant.
The immediate priority will be to establish a clear playing identity and rebuild confidence following the Netherlands’ early exit from the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32.
His first major test will come quickly, with the Netherlands scheduled to face Germany in the Nations League on September 24.
Beyond the immediate fixtures, Xavi’s long-term focus will be on developing a team capable of challenging for major honours and building towards the 2030 World Cup.
The Spaniard has already indicated that he wants his Netherlands side to reflect the country’s traditional commitment to attacking football, possession, creativity and technical quality.
For the Dutch Football Association, the appointment represents a bold attempt to combine the country’s footballing philosophy with the perspective of a coach who grew up admiring and later mastering many of the same principles.
Xavi now has four years to turn that vision into results and lead the Netherlands back among Europe’s leading international sides.
