Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé believes 2026 could finally be the year he wins the Ballon d’Or, as the France captain continues his push for the prestigious individual award.
Mbappé has backed his chances after another prolific campaign in front of goal, insisting that his performances have put him among the leading contenders for the honour.
The 27-year-old made his position known on Monday during a press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday.
“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappé said.
“There are many people who speak about me and the Ballon d’Or. Of course, I’ve made history in the most important competition. Maybe it’s a good year for this, but people can vote according to what they think.”
Mbappé, who has never won the award, said he considers himself the best player in the world but accepts that the final decision rests with the journalists who vote.
“I always think I’m the best [player in the world], but everyone has their own opinion. Maybe people think different ways. I don’t think it’s a discussion we need to have,” he said.
“Of course, this year could be good for me to win the Ballon d’Or, but journalists vote.”
The France international has built a strong case through his individual performances. He scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last season and has already reached 90 goals in 107 games for the Spanish giants.
He also remains France’s all-time leading scorer and has scored 22 goals at the World Cup, a record for the competition.
Despite his remarkable numbers, Mbappé finished fourth in the previous Ballon d’Or ranking, while his highest-ever position remains third, which he achieved in 2023 during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.
His challenge this year, however, comes with stiff competition.
England captain Harry Kane is currently the favourite after scoring a club-record 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich during their domestic double-winning campaign. Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and his teammate Rodri are also among the leading contenders.
Mbappé’s individual record remains impressive. He has won eight consecutive league Golden Boots across France and Spain, along with two World Cup Golden Boots and two Champions League scoring titles.
Yet, the Champions League and major club trophies remain the missing pieces of his Real Madrid story.
Mbappé has scored 90 goals in 107 appearances since moving to the Bernabéu, but is still chasing his first Champions League title with the Spanish club.
Real Madrid will begin that quest against Inter Milan on Tuesday, in a competition Mbappé hopes will strengthen his case for the Ballon d’Or.
The award will be presented on October 26, with Mbappé hoping his goals, consistency and performances can finally earn him the individual crown he has long pursued.
