The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has inaugurated a 155-member Campaign Advisory Council, with Governor Abba Yusuf appointed as chairman, as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 presidential and governorship elections.
The council brings together key figures from the state’s political leadership, including former governors Ibrahim Shekarau and Abdullahi Ganduje, as well as former military administrators Habibu Shuaibu, Lawan Jafaru-Isa and Yakubu Bako.
The Kano State APC chairman, Umar Doguwa, said the council was made up of prominent party leaders and elected officials expected to provide strategic direction for the party’s campaign preparations.
Other members include Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, and Senators Kawu Sumaila and Rufa’i Hanga. APC candidates and members of the House of Representatives from Kano State are also represented on the council.
According to the party, the advisory council will provide strategic oversight for its 2027 campaign operations, while the composition and leadership of the operational campaign directorate are expected to be announced later.
The move reflects the APC’s efforts to bring influential political figures and elected representatives together as parties begin organising their structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kano remains an important political battleground because of its large electorate and influence in northern Nigerian politics. The inclusion of serving and former political officeholders in the council places experienced figures at the centre of the party’s preparations in the state.
The development follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s release of its final list of governorship candidates for Kano State, which included Yusuf.
Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had yet to announce their campaign councils at the time of the report.
The NDC is also facing uncertainty over the omission of its governorship candidate, Aminu Gwarzo, from INEC’s list. The development has raised questions about the party’s participation in the governorship election, with the party reportedly pursuing legal and administrative remedies.
As preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum, the APC’s advisory council is expected to play a role in coordinating the party’s political strategy in Kano, while the opposition parties continue to organise their campaigns and address outstanding challenges.
