The 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on Monday evening, with Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal among the leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual award.
This year’s race is expected to be closely contested, with the leading candidates presenting strong cases based on their goals, individual performances and team achievements over the 2025/26 season.
Kane, the Bayern Munich and England captain, is hoping to become the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001. The striker scored an impressive 73 goals for club and country, helping Bayern secure domestic silverware. However, his failure to win the Champions League or the World Cup could affect his chances.
Mbappe, meanwhile, enters the contest after another prolific campaign with Real Madrid and France. The forward finished as the leading scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the 2026 World Cup, where he also claimed the Golden Boot. Despite his remarkable scoring record, neither Real Madrid nor France won their respective major competitions.
Barcelona’s Yamal is seeking to make history as the youngest-ever Ballon d’Or winner at 19. The Spanish winger won another La Liga title before helping Spain lift the World Cup. However, an injury-disrupted campaign and his limited goal contribution at the tournament could count against him.
Defending champion Ousmane Dembele is also in contention after helping Paris Saint-Germain retain the Champions League title, while his teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has earned recognition for his decisive performances in Europe.
Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, former winner Rodri and eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient Lionel Messi are among the other notable names in the race.
The award will recognise performances between August 3, 2025, and July 19, 2026, with voters expected to weigh individual brilliance against collective success on the biggest stages.
For Kane, victory would end England’s 25-year wait for another winner. For Mbappe, it would reward his extraordinary goal-scoring form, while a triumph for Yamal would confirm his rapid rise among the game’s elite.
With no clear-cut candidate, Monday’s ceremony promises an intriguing contest as football’s biggest stars await the verdict.
